Thursday Thoughts

Drawing from Deep Waters

Luke 5:4-6 (New International Version)
4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,
"Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch."
5Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets."
6When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.

The disciples were fishermen by trade. They knew how to catch fish. They had been fishing all night. They were tired of trying and ready to quit. Ever been there? Despite their probable (and justifiable) aggravation and documented exhaustion, the disciples did something that had become natural to them…something we are most times hesitant to do….they did exactly what Christ said even though logically it did not make sense.

Dear sweet reader, have you given it all you have? Have you had your friends out in the fishing boat at all hours of the night trying all the “right things” to catch fish, only to watch the sun rise on empty nets…
In your marriage?
With your job?
With your family?
With your finances?

Have you read every book, been to every conference, joined every Bible Study, spent money on counseling, gone back to school , gotten a better paying job, and sought out godly advice from friends and family only to find that you are exhausted…and still holding an empty net? If you find yourself sitting on the shore with an empty net draped over the bow of your boat, listen to the Savior….

“drop your net in the deep waters” ---- the deep waters of God’s word----and find the truths that will set you (and those you have pulled into the boat with you) free….

John 8:31-32 (New International Version)

31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
