We all have one you know. Whether we admit it to ourselves or not, we have a mental checklist of what we have to do or achieve in order to be “good”. Perhaps your list looks something like this….
Go to church ……check
Go to Sunday School ……check
Sing in the choir ……check
Volunteer for Vacation Bible School ……check
Send my kids to Church Camp ……check
Teach Sunday School ……check
Invite my friends to church ……check
Read my Bible ……check
Take my kids to church ……check
Stay faithful to my spouse ……check
Don’t drink ……check
Don’t curse ……check
Don’t use drugs ……check
Don’t steal ……check
The Pharisees had a list too. They had 613 rules to follow. I truly hope that your checklist is not that long, but if it is, please read this carefully……obeying 613 rules is not good enough.
God knew this (Romans 3:23 (New International Version) for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God)
…and sent Jesus (Matthew 1:23 (New International Version)"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"—which means, "God with us.")
…to live a perfect life (2 Corinthians 5:21 (King James Version) For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.)
… to pay the penalty for your sin and mine (Philippians 2:8 (New International Version) And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and came obedient to death— even death on a cross!)
…to defeat death and the grave (Matthew 28:6 (New International Version) He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.)
… and to reign with God in heaven as our intercessor (Romans 8:34 (New International Version)Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us)
…and gave us ALL a new check list….
Accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and savior of my life……CHECK
If you MUST follow a check list, Jesus gave us 2 commands
"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:36-40
If you need a gauge for your Christian walk, use the Fruit of the Spirit.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control."
(Galatians 5:22) These qualities are given to every Christian upon Salvation. These are things that the Holy Spirit will cultivate in your soul as you grow closer to God.
Throw out your checklist. It is only a tool Satan uses to put you in bondage. God does not desire a perfectly checked off list. He wants you. All of you. Just as you are. He wants you to come to Him and allow Him to mold you into the woman He dreamed of when He dreamed of you. If you could become that woman on your own, He would not have sent Jesus, so stop trying to do God’s job. You’re off the hook. He’s got it covered.
Throw out your checklist.
