Firm Foundation

We have had an "Arctic Blast" here in the south and it was snowing this morning on my way to work. Now, before I go any farther, please understand I am truly a southern girl. I have lived in the south all my life and in the DEEP south all my adult life. Until today, my idea of "icy" roads was slush in the road with an occasional slick spot on a bridge. The ground just doesn't get cold enough here for the roads to actually ice over.
So, Im on my way to work. I decided to take the interstate, because it looked like traffic was moving along without any hiccups. I got on the interstate and immediately knew I'd made a bad choice. The road was white. I've never seen this. USUALLY when it snows here, the lawns are white, the trees are white, and the roads are black. Not today.

Everything was fine until a truck stopped in front of me and I had to apply my brakes. My tires locked up and I skidded a little. My heart was racing! When the truck started to accelerate, he fishtailed. It took that truck several minutes to get traction and I kept my distance from him! I got to work without further incident. However, I passed NUMEROUS cars, trucks, and SUVs in the median, crashed into the guardrails and in the trees along the interstate.

It struck me that this is a near perfect picture of life. I have had times in my life when I knew that I wasn't in the best or safest place, but seemed to be doing okay...until I started to skid out of control; and much like that truck that was in front of me today, it took me a while to regain traction and get going back in the right direction...and sometimes I ended up broken and battered much like those cars crunched up against the guardrail.

I've learned that the best plan of action to decrease the risk of skidding out of control is to make sure I'm on firm, dry ground.

Scripture says that our firm foundation is found in God:
19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” 2 Timothy 2:19
