When Someone You Love Is Hurting
There is nothing that will make us feel more helpless than knowing someone we love is hurting. Whether you are facing a child's broken heart, a friend's divorce, or the death of a friend's loved one, there are a few things we can do to help them get through the hurt.
1 Listen- let them talk it out. So many times our instinct is to get their mind off the hurt, to help them "move on". Because this is most people's tactic, we can leave that up to the others in your friend's life. YOU can be that friend who listens. Just let your hurting friend talk. Let them express how they feel. You can't "fix" the hurt, so just listen.
2 Hug- there is power in a hug. Just as you scoop a young child up in your arms when he or he is hurt, wrapping a hurting friend in a hug is comforting and soothing. A hug says all the things we cannot put into words.
3 "I'm here"- let your friend know that you are available when they need you. Give them time to grieve, give them space, but let them know that they are not alone.
4 Pray- pray for God to comfort and heal your friend. God alone can heal a broken heart.
When someone we love is hurting, we want to fix it. In times of hurt, love your friend, listen to them, pray that God will comfort them and give them peace. Then let God take care of healing their heart.
